Billie Eilish was honoured at the WSJ Magazine Innovator Awards, where she made an impactful speech that left people talking all over social media.
The 23-year-old accepted the Music Innovator Award and also revealed that she will be donating $11.5 million from the proceedings of her tour.
During her acceptance speech, the Birds of a Feather hitmaker urged people richer than her to put their money to great use, saying, “I’d say, if you have money, it would be great to use it for good things, maybe give it to some people that need it.”
Eilish continued, “Love you all, but there’s a few people in here that have a lot more money than me. If you’re a billionaire, why are you a billionaire? No hate, but yeah, give your money away, shorties,” addressing the crowd which had Mark Zuckerberg, Priscilla Chan, Hailey Bieber, George Lucas, Tory Burch, and Karlie Kloss.
Although Taylor Swift was not in attendance, many social media users argued that the Grammy winner targeted the pop superstar too, with one writing on X, “she’s shading Taylor i think.”
Someone asked, “Meanwhile what has Taylor donated?”
A third chimed in, “The way Rihanna is the unethical billionaire but people are busy hating on Taylor and Selena Gomez,” after which a tweet explained, “This is directed at every single billionaire. At Elon Musk, at Taylor Swift and everyone in between.”
However, some comments criticised her move, doubting the intention behind as they wrote, “So she is donating to the ‘Climate Crisis’ globalist griff. She is either in on it or just really really dumb,” and “Making donations and then announcing it i know what you are Billie.”
Another judged, “A nice big tax write-off.”
Responding to the negative comments, one X user noted, “she did a good thing and she’s still getting hate for it be for real.”
